The City of Brandon has an Animal Control By-law in place.

The owner of every dog and cat over six months of age shall annually obtain a license (proof of rabies vaccination and spayed or neutering is required).

The following list of rules set forth in the Pet Bylaws is NOT exhaustive:
- No person shall own, possess, or harbor any more than two dogs and two cats over six months of age.
- The owner of every dog and cat over six months of age shall annually obtain a license for a fee. (A license will not be issued if a Certificate of Vaccination for rabies is not produced).
- The current year’s license tag should be kept around the neck of every dog or cat.
- Every dog or cat should be vaccinated against rabies at intervals of no more than two years.
- License fees can be obtained by calling the Licensing Section 204-729-2230.
- Owners shall not permit their dog to be anywhere other than on the owner’s premises unless the dog has a collar with the proper license tag, the dog is on a leash (no longer than 1.8 meters/6 feet), and the dog is under the immediate charge and control of a competent person.
- Owners shall not permit their cat to be anywhere other than on the owner’s premises unless the cat has a collar and the proper license tag.
- Dogs and/or cats are not allowed to run at large. (Except in designated off-leash dog parks)
- Owners shall not permit their dog and/or cat to disturb the quiet of any person (in the case of a dog howling / barking).
- Owners shall not permit their dog and/or cat to defecate on any public or private property other than that of the owners. Where a dog and/or cat defecate on property other than the owners, the owner shall remove the excrement immediately and dispose of it in accordance with the City’s Solid Waste Disposal By-law. - The owner of any dog and/or cat impounded may redeem their pet from the pound within 72 hours of impoundment by providing proof of current rabies vaccination, producing or buying a current City dog/cat license, and paying the applicable impound fees. Impound fees can be obtained by calling the Brandon Boarding Kennel at 204-728-3260.
- Should you experience difficulties with pets running free, please contact animal control 204-729-2345. Also, if your pet has gone missing and you wish to determine whether by-law enforcement has picked it up, please call animal control 204-729-2345.

Animal oriented recreation for all enthusiasts, such as; obedience classes, agility training, fly ball, shows, exhibitions and events for dogs, cats, horses, agriculture and exotic animals, and other small pets are frequently held and offered in Brandon.
